Police Encounter on Mehdood–Bariana Link Road/One Injured, One Arrested

A police encounter took place late Wednesday evening on the Mehdood–Bariana link road, leaving one suspect injured and another arrested. The accused were allegedly involved in the recent firing incident at a jeweller’s shop in Mahilpur town, police confirmed.Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Sandeep Kumar Malik (IPS) said a police team had been formed to trace the culprits involved in the Mahilpur firing incident. The team included SP Parminder Singh, DSP Parneet Singh Dhillon, CIA In-charge Gurpreet Singh, and SHO Jai Pal Singh of Mahilpur Police Station.According to SSP Malik, CCTV visuals of the two suspects on a motorcycle had been circulated to the public, leading to a tip-off about two men wearing helmets and roaming near village Gajjar Mehdood. Acting on the information, the police team rushed to the area. When officers signaled the motorcyclists to stop on the Mehdood–Bariana road, the suspects allegedly opened fire on the police. In retaliation, police fired back, resulting in an exchange of three cartridge from each side.One suspect was shot in the leg and later admitted to the Civil Hospital in Hoshiarpur, while the other was taken into custody at the spot.Preliminary investigation revealed the duo to be father and son—Keshav, the injured, and Krishan Gopal, who was arrested unhurt. Both are residents of Benchan (Tanda) village. Police recovered a motorcycle, helmet, and cartridges from the encounter site and have initiated legal proceedings.
