Hoshiarpur/Daljeet Ajnoha/Nov.11
While the proposal to make Sri Anandpur Sahib a new district has been largely welcomed by the local residents, the inclusion of the Garhshankar region in the proposed new district has sparked strong opposition among the people of Garhshankar. In view of this, representatives of all political parties, trade associations, and social organizations, under the leadership of Darshan Singh Mattu, submitted a memorandum to Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann through Punjab Assembly Deputy Speaker Jai Krishan Singh Rouri. The memorandum urged the state government not to include the Garhshankar sub-division in the proposed Sri Anandpur Sahib district. The representatives stated that the Garhshankar sub-division has deep historical, administrative, and economic ties with Hoshiarpur district and should therefore remain a part of it. They appealed to the government to respect the sentiments of the local people.Deputy Speaker Jai Krishan Singh Rouri assured that the memorandum would be conveyed to Chief Minister Mann. He clarified that the government currently has no formal plan or announcement regarding the creation of a new district at Sri Anandpur Sahib or the inclusion of Garhshankar in it. Rouri added that if the government decides to form a new district in the future, the final decision would be taken only after consulting the local residents.Representatives of various political parties, members of the Garhshankar Trade Association, and several social organizations were present on the occasion.
