Vote Politics & Free Schemes Push Punjab Towards Bankruptcy: Sanjiv Kumar

Senior journalist and social worker Sanjiv Kumar has expressed serious concern over the deteriorating financial condition of Punjab, blaming vote-bank politics and irrational free schemes for pushing the state towards bankruptcy.
He highlighted that the policy of free travel for women in government buses has severely damaged the public transport system. “Even well-off women, who can afford to pay, are traveling free at the cost of taxpayers’ money. This is nothing but vote politics.
Kumar further pointed out that free electricity to financially capable households is being misused and draining the state exchequer. “Instead of blanket freebies, the government should rationalize these policies and convert them into subsidy-based support for the needy,” he suggested.
With Punjab Assembly elections scheduled in about a year, the state government is reportedly planning to offer ₹1,000 per month to every woman. Calling this move disastrous, Kumar warned that Punjab, already reeling under a debt of nearly ₹4 lakh crore, cannot bear such additional financial burdens.
He also drew attention to the plight of state employees who are not receiving their DA installments on time, while arrears of revised pay scales remain pending. The next pay revision is due next year, further intensifying the fiscal stress.
“This is an alarming situation. Punjab needs strong economic reforms, not freebies. People must discourage political parties that promise unsustainable schemes only for votes,” Kumar appealed.
