Former MP Avinash Rai Khanna stated that people who are speech and hearing impaired cannot speak or hear, which makes it very difficult for them to express their problems or understand others in emergency situations. While the government has issued various helpline phone numbers for the public, such helplines are not effective for the mute and deaf, as they cannot communicate or comprehend through normal phone calls without assistance.
Khanna explained that taking the initiative on this issue, he requested the Central Government to issue a WhatsApp helpline number for the speech and hearing impaired. He emphasized that although they are unable to speak or hear, they can still send messages, images, or videos through WhatsApp independently during emergencies to seek help from authorities.
Khanna shared that he had been pursuing this matter for a long time, writing to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Ministry of Communications, the Ministry of Social Welfare, and the Lok Sabha Petition Committee to address this critical need.
He said that eventually, he received a letter from the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, informing him that the Central Government has issued a WhatsApp helpline number 8929667579 for the speech and hearing impaired. In addition, a QR code has been made available on the official website www.depwd.gov.in, which users can scan to directly access the relevant portal.
Khanna expressed his heartfelt thanks to Prime Minister Modi, the concerned ministries, and the Lok Sabha committee, stating that this WhatsApp helpline will allow mute and deaf individuals to independently communicate with the government in any emergency, providing them a major relief and support system.
