Under the leadership of Deputy Commissioner Aashika Jain, the Hoshiarpur District Administration has achieved a remarkable milestone by securing 95 lakh rupees in funding for Heatwave Management. Notably, Hoshiarpur is the only district in Punjab to receive such funding.
DC Ashika Jain credited this success to the collective efforts and visionary approach of Assistant Commissioner Oishee Mandal, Red Cross Society Secretary Mangesh Sood, and their entire team. She informed that the proposal was submitted by the District Red Cross Society to the Department of Revenue, Rehabilitation & Disaster Management, Punjab, which has now formally approved it.
Calling the initiative a progressive and people-centric step, Jain said it aims to mitigate the adverse impacts of climate change and enhance public safety during extreme heat conditions. The project, titled “Heatwave Mitigation Plan,” will focus on creating climate-resilient infrastructure and awareness at the community level.
As part of the initiative, Cooling Centers and Shaded Waiting Areas will be set up across urban and rural locations to provide respite from heat. Public places such as bus stands, traffic points, and government buildings will be equipped with fans, coolers, and air conditioners. For safe drinking water, the project will establish Water Kiosks, Mobile Water Distribution Units, and ORS supply centers.
Emergency medical facilities will be strengthened in hospitals through the provision of hydration kits, essential medicines, and additional beds. Furthermore, awareness campaigns will be organized to educate the public on heatwave safety measures, while emergency relief funds will be allocated for contingency response and water supply during extreme heat events.
DC Aashika Jain emphasized that this initiative is crucial for public health and safety, reflecting the administration’s commitment to building a climate-smart and disaster-resilient Hoshiarpur. She also commended Assistant Commissioner Oishee Mandal for her dedicated contribution in conceptualizing and advancing the project.
Expressing confidence in the project’s long-term impact, Jain stated that it will become a model for other districts in Punjab in addressing climate challenges. The administration plans to implement the project swiftly to ensure timely relief for citizens during the upcoming summer season.
